Refugee Festival Football Tournament 2022

Harnessing the power of sport: June 26th 2022

The Refugee Festival Football Tournament is an annual celebration of the power of football as a positive force for good.

It is the flagship event from the Scottish Unity Football League (SUFL) and Glasgow Afghan United (GAU) and works to break down barriers between communities, overcome prejudice and help people reach their potential, whatever their background is. We believe this is the real beauty of ‘the beautiful game’.

Teams are drawn from the SUFL and beyond, with Police Scotland, the Armed Forces, Members of Parliament, local football academies and other groups regularly fielding squads to compete on a level playing field. This mix helps to overcome ‘them and us’ attitudes between communities and authorities for better relations in our vibrant and changing society.

The SUFL: Diversity in action

Games are regular and regulated, costs are kept low to encourage participation and there is a zero tolerance approach to racism and all other forms of prejudice.

Players have told us how much they appreciate this unique playing field and many have real potential – Karamoko Dembele started out at the SUFL before breaking through to Celtic FC, and there have been various other successes.

The tournament: Confidence and accomplishment

The one-day seven-a-side championship will be staged at Toryglen Regional Football Centre on June 26th. There will be more than 20 teams and we anticipate players hailing from around 50 different nations, all residing here in Scotland.

Last year we took inspiration from UEFA Euro 2020 action taking place in the city of Glasgow, with each team allocated a Euro 2020 country to compete as. For example, Red Road FC played as Hungary. After a day of fierce competition, Scoutable FC emerged as champions after seeing off the challenge of the Jimmy Johnstone Academy.

This year: The best yet

In 2022, we are planning to have the best tournament yet, building on previous success and the experience we have gained. Every year, the tournament has brought in more people and more interest. We are working to make this as representative as possible.

We are very proud to stage this very special festival that harnesses the power, positivity and potential of football to make connections and change lives.
