For many in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province, life will never be the same. A deadly earthquake and aftershocks have claimed thousands of lives, left many more injured and homeless, and crippled already weak infrastructure. Ordinary people living in the region’s villages lack the support to rebuild. And so, from here in Scotland, GAU was determined to help. Thanks to the generosity of our partner, The Linda Norgrove Foundation, and of members of the Scottish Afghan community, we have been on the ground supplying lifeline aid to families who have lost everything. Our packs contain food, tents, blankets, cooking equipment, toiletries and other essentials.
This support from Scotland is making a real and immediate impact in addressing challenges over shelter, nutrition and hygiene, and is restoring an element of dignity to the lives of those affected.
The quake struck suddenly and happened as the people slept, leaving little chance for escape. Many of the homes destroyed were stone-built and stood on the slopes of mountains. Lack of road access made the situation more difficult but our volunteers quickly mobilised to get information about the situation on the ground. Logistics and procurement priorities were speedily identified and we made fast progress in delivering essentials to villages in Nurgal District. We worked overnight to help in Darai Nur and Mazar Dara, where there is so much destruction and hardship.
One man showed us where his five grandchildren are buried, all victims of the catastrophe.
We are proud to be able to make a difference. One villager said: “We sincerely appreciate the support and assistance you have extended to us.” Another said: “Your efforts in visiting this area are deeply appreciated.”
